Along with the rapid pace of global integration, international express delivery services have continued to grow significantly. Among the most popular options is EMS international express delivery. In this article, HB Logistics will help you understand what EMS is and the important considerations when using this service.
1. What Is EMS International Express Delivery?
EMS (Express Mail Service) International is a premium delivery service that specializes in the collection, transportation, and delivery of documents, letters, parcels, merchandise, and international shipments within specific standard transit times.
Currently, EMS international services are available from all 63 provinces and cities throughout Vietnam and deliver to more than 100 countries and territories worldwide through agreements between EMS operators, members of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), and other international partners.
2. General Regulations on Acceptable and Prohibited Goods
a. General Regulations on Prohibited Goods
Each country has its own list of prohibited imports and exports. In addition to those regulations, EMS also maintains its own restrictions on certain items, including:
- Illegal goods, narcotics, and psychotropic substances.
- Weapons, ammunition, and military equipment.
- Explosive, flammable, hazardous, or environmentally harmful materials.
- Goods prohibited from circulation, trading, export, or import under government regulations.
- Vietnamese currency, foreign currency, and negotiable instruments.
- Precious and semi-precious metals (gold, silver, platinum, etc.), gemstones, and products made from such materials.
- Batteries and battery-powered devices.
- Goods whose nature or packaging may endanger handling personnel, transportation staff, the public, or the environment.
- Shipments containing multiple parcels addressed to different recipients.
- Counterfeit goods, imitation products, and items that infringe intellectual property rights.
b. General Regulations on Conditional Shipments
- Goods must comply with Vietnam’s export regulations and the import regulations of the destination country, as well as regulations established by postal administrations and the Universal Postal Union.
- Commercial shipments must be accompanied by all legally required documentation.
- Goods subject to specialized regulatory control must comply with the requirements of the relevant authorities and international postal regulations.
- Shipments transported by air must comply with aviation security regulations. Powdered or liquid substances must be accompanied by a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for acceptance evaluation.
- Perishable goods or products requiring special storage conditions may be subject to additional requirements.
Note: The information above is for reference only. Regulations in Vietnam, destination countries, and airline carriers may change over time according to current legal and operational requirements.
3. Weight and Size Regulations
Currently, EMS International does not impose limits on the total weight or number of packages within a shipment. However, each package must comply with the following requirements:
- Maximum length of any one side: 274 cm.
- Maximum combined length and girth: 400 cm.
- Maximum weight per package: 70 kg.
- Volumetric weight calculations are applied according to EMS regulations.
4. How Long Does EMS International Shipping Take?
EMS delivery times vary depending on the destination country and distance.
Typical transit times include:
- From Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi to major cities in Asia: approximately 2–5 business days.
- From Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi to major cities in Eastern, Central, and Western Europe: approximately 3–8 business days.
Additional Notes:
- Deliveries from provincial centers in Vietnam to capital cities or major cities abroad may require an additional 1–2 days beyond the standard transit time.

5. How to Track an EMS Shipment
An EMS tracking number is a unique identification code printed on the shipping label and package.
a. Why Is Tracking Important?
Tracking numbers allow customers to:
- Monitor the current status of their shipment.
- Identify the shipment’s location during transit.
- Estimate delivery times.
- Confirm whether the recipient has received the package.
